It's Our Leg - 2 Timothy 4:1-8

February 27, 2012 by Matt Morgan

In a relay race different runners run different legs of the same race. In order to compete well each runner must give his all to the leg of the race that has been determined for him to run. At the end of his leg each runner wants to be able to say, "I gave my all while running my leg. I didn't hold anything back. I poured myself out completely running the leg of the race that was determined for me to run." As we approach the end of Paul's second letter to Timothy, Paul seems to be handing the baton of ministry to Timothy. In the verses we cover this week Paul reminds Timothy that he has poured himself out completely while running his leg and is now passing the baton to him, to run and to carry out the tasks which Paul has given himself to as a believer in Christ. Today, these verses have great implications for those who profess to be believers in Christ, for now the baton is in our hands and we need to be running well!

Stay the Course - 2 Timothy 3:10-17

February 20, 2012 by Matt Morgan

While following after Christ and living for the glory of God is the most fulfilling thing we could ever be a part of and what we were created to do, the reality is, it is often a very exhausting and difficult task. Paul had become aware of Timothy's exhaustion and also knew that there were false teachers preying on those who were worn down and might be swayed by the promise of something new and less demanding. So in this portion of Paul's letter to Timothy he encourages Timothy to stay the course - an encouragement many believers of Christ need to hear today!

New Life in Christ - Not Something New - 2 Timothy 3:1-9

February 10, 2012 by Matt Morgan

Too often we buy into the marketing and sales pitches in our culture that tell us that fulfillment, joy, and satisfaction can be found in things. As a result we find ourselves purchasing new and different things to try to find that fulfillment, joy, and satisfaction those products promise. The scary thing is those false promises and clever salesmen aren't isolated to the secular marketplace. Paul tells Timothy that in our time there will be many false teachers who will ultimately do a great deal of damage to the body of Christ if we aren't aware of them and on our guard. We need to pay attention to Paul's warnings in 2 Timothy 3:1-9 and make sure we understand the truth that life is found in Christ alone - not other things.

Burning Out AND Left Out? - 2 Timothy 2:14-26

February 6, 2012 by Matt Morgan

Feeling burnt out in one's faith can be a difficult thing to cope with. It doesn't get any easier when we find ourselves in the midst of trials or difficulties that can sometimes accompany our service for Christ. Add to that the discouragement that can come when we encounter false teachers who make compelling arguments which cause us to doubt the genuineness of our faith and you can end up wondering if you're even believing and living for the right thing. Where is the hope when this is the reality that you're experiencing? And how should the truths and promises of God compel you to live in the midst of these times? These are some of the questions we'll be taking on in this week's portion of 2 Timothy.

There is a Bright Side - 2 Timothy 2:1-13

January 30, 2012 by Matt Morgan

When we are feeling burnt out in our faith and find ourselves in the midst of the hardships and trials that come as believers in Christ, Satan will often try to deceive us into believing that there is no bright side – that being a follower of Christ is all suffering and misery. But that, like all of Satan’s other whisperings, isn’t the whole truth. Still, he can make a pretty convincing case. So the question we want to consider this week is “What makes up the bright side of my faith and calling when all I can seem to see is the dark side?”

Power for this Purpose - 2 Timothy 1:8-18

January 23, 2012 by Matt Morgan

When we find ourselves exhausted and worn out in our faith, knowing that we have power to continue and press on would be a great encouragement. And that's exactly what Paul reminds Timothy of in this passage. Paul knew that the proclamation of the gospel wasn't an easy task and that there were difficulties involved. But Paul was also certain of the power that he possessed and that every other believer in Christ possesses. Paul reminds Timothy that God has given him power to press on proclaiming the good news of the gospel - news that should inspire and encourage us when we experience 'burn out' in our own faith.

Fan the Flame - 2 Timothy 1:3-7

January 16, 2012 by Matt Morgan

I became an owner of a charcoal grill during the summer and thoroughly enjoined using it to cook out. But I learned an important lesson a few weeks ago when I attempted to cook out on a particularly cold winter night. The cold temperatures caused the hot charcoal to die out incredibly quickly and left me with a bunch of half-cooked burgers. There I sat with no way of re-lighting the charcoal, no way of turning up the heat, and realizing that the charcoal in the grill had become useless for cooking the burgers. As I considered the situation it made me wonder, "Is this a picture of believers and the Church in our society today? Is our faith burning out? Has our faith become weak and cold? And are we simply residing in the world, but having little impact on those around us? And if so, is there any hope?"
